Week 4: Love

Reader: Today is our fourth celebration of the Advent season. Advent is a time of waiting for a very special arrival. We all wait together in hopeful expectation, knowing that God has promised to send divine light, peace, joy and love into our dark and unloving world.
Reader: God’s light, peace, joy and love come through Jesus, who became a human being just like us so he could show us the way back to God’s divine light, and till us with Love for God and for all our fellow human beings, friend and foe alike.
Congregation: Merciful God, give us grace to wait just a little longer, to be patient and always alert, on the ready, to welcome our Lord the moment he arrives. Reader: A reading from the prophet Isaiah: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”
Reader: Today, as we continue to wait for the imminent coming of our Lord Jesus, we light the candles of Hope, Peace, and Joy, and add to them the candle of Love.

All four candles are lit.

Reader: Each candle that we light reminds us that the Light ofthe World will soon come to us in the human form of Jesus. Now, at the end of our Advent waiting period, all four candles bum bright with our hope and our firm belief that God will indeed come to us. On Christmas Eve, when we celebrate the birth of our Lord, we will finally light the center candle that represents the Christ Child.
Congregation: Our time of waiting is almost over. Blessed are all who believe there will be a fulfillment of God’s promises to us. May we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Jesus. When he comes to us, may we be ready to help him lift up the poor and oppressed and bring down the unjust ones who use their wealth and power to keep others down. May God use us to till the hungry with good things. May all of God’s people know hope, peace, joy and love when the Light shines its brightness over our world, and we remember when the Word became flesh and lived among us. Amen.

International Women’s Day was founded by Clara Eissner Zetkin a socialist, anti war and women’s rights activist from Germany. The day was instituted first on March 19, 1911 at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference was attended by 100 women from 17 countries. Later on the date was changed to March 8, 1911. Zetkin organized the International Socialist Anti War conference in Berlin in 1915, calling for an end to World War I. She went on to co-found the Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1917 and served for 13 years as a member of the Reichstag, during which time she served as a member of the executive committee of the Communist International Party. As the chairwoman of the Reichstag in 1932, she publicly fought the rise of the National Socialism movement (the NAZI party). She was banned from Germany by Adolf Hitler in 1933. She died later that year in the Soviet Union and was buried at the Kremlin.

Six days after the first International Women’s Day, the tragic Triangle Waistshirt Factory Fire took place at 25 Washington Place, near Washington Square Park. In a half hour, 133 Italian and Jewish immigrant girls (ages 16-23) and 13 men were burned to death or had jumped form the 9th floor to their deaths.

The factory doors were locked to prevent theft so the workers could not exit the building. The injustice of the lives lost in that fire fueled a worker’s rights movement here in the U.S., including participation in an International commemoration of working women in remembrance of the lives lost at the Triangle factory fire and participation in International Women’s Day here in the U.S. The movement to celebrate the day was championed by the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union. Intemational Women’s Day grew to become International Women’s Week and ultimately here in the U.S. is celebrated as Women’s History Month.

Our condolences are offered to Guy and Xing Zoda and their mother, Anita Zoda on the death of her mother and grandmother, Julia Balducci on June 2, 2008. Julia passed away after a short illness in California at the age of 95 years. A memorial service will be held Tuesday the 10th at 11:30 AM in the Parish House.
